I left out comments made by the Schumachers over something Ralf was supposed to have said about Michael. They are in the weblog if anyone's interested. Previous to the race Ralf crashed on the 13th turn in the same place as last year so he didn't take part. Still a lot was written beforehand. There may be more to add. Ralf's latest crash is understood to have been triggered by a left-rear tyre failure, but the precise cause has not been pinpointed by Michelin. Fortunately, safety improvements since last year meant he hit an energy-absorbing SAFER barrier that has been extended 70 meters along the pit straight. Ralf: "I was approaching the last corner when I felt something go wrong on the left-hand side. We will now have to investigate exactly what happened and why... I was just a bit more lucky this time" Ralf was sure he would be back in time for the next French GP on July 3. "This news is obviously very disappointing for myself and for the team. I wish the team all the best for the rest of the weekend and I'm confident that I will be back in time for this month's French Grand Prix" sportsillustrated.cnn.com Ralf on pulling out of the race: "The risk was too high to let me go again... I am relatively happy, I went through the scans and everything is fine. There was a little concussion but nothing severe really. Obviously I don't feel 100 percent fit after a crash like that and it's a shame not to be there for the team" Michael Schumacher was pleased that safety modifications to the wall made in the aftermath of last year's crash helped protect his brother. The energy-absorbing Safer barrier was extended to cover Ralf's 2004 point of impact and that helped minimise the damage in practice. Michael said: "I was just coming back to the pits when that happened so the first thing I knew about it was seeing him get out of the car unaided and walk away. I am glad he is okay and also glad that the modifications we asked to be made to the wall were carried out after his accident there last year" Jenson Button: "It's a little bit worrying to see that happen, especially to him twice now. I should think he's pretty annoyed! The good thing is they've got the soft wall there all the way through the corner. It was a pretty big impact, but he was able to get out and walk away. There will be a lot of discussions between both tyre manufacturers and all the teams I'm sure, because we don't want that happening again" Ralf pulls out of US GP Ralf was advised by doctors not to take part in the remainder of the weekend, just to be on the safe side. Ralf: “I am basically fine and about 80 percent fit to drive, but the FIA decided against it because of the risk of having another hard impact within 48 hours. I had scans and I was pretty happy, everything was fine – but I did not feel 100 percent and it is a safety move. The decision was made by the FIA, and it was a tough decision to make” Ralf waits on Indianapolis all-clear Ralf had to wait until Saturday for clearance to race in the U.S. GP. "Thankfully, I am feeling okay," said Ralf after precautionary checks in hospital. "But that was quite a big accident. Lightning is not supposed to strike twice in the same place but on this occasion I guess that does not apply to me" Ralf taken to hospital after shunt “Ralf is okay” a Toyota spokesperson told the Reuters news agency. Ralf escapes injury in big crash Ralf was travelling at approximately 180mph coming through the banked final corner onto the start/finish straight when his Toyota swapped ends on him with no warning whatsoever. After spiralling into a series of spins the car made heavy rearward contact with the SAFER barrier on the outside, finally coming to rest several hundred yards up the road on the pit straight. The impact ripped off the left-hand wheels of the TF105 and caused extensive damage to the bodywork and suspension. Ralf was quickly able to extricate himself from the wreckage, although he looked slightly dazed as he paused against the pit wall and was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks. The cause of the accident is not yet clear, but the suddenness with which the car snapped out of shape pointed to some sort of mechanical or tyre problem. The banked final curve puts unusual loadings on the tyres but Michelin boss Pierre Dupasquier said that as yet there was "absolutely no evidence" that the tyre had failed. Ralf crashes again at Indianapolis Ralf hit the wall at almost the same spot where he crashed last year in a Williams during the race. Yesterday he was able to get out of the car, apparently unscathed, whereas last year he lay slumped for what seemed an age before receiving medical attention and being taken to hospital. The practice session was immediately halted for officials to clear debris. Something appeared to give as Ralf powered into the banked final corner, the fastest section of the track that cars take at more than 300kph, before the pit straight. The Toyota spun, hit the wall with the rear and then skidded across the track with the left side wrecked. homeoff1.com Ralf: "It's true that Jarno does a better job in qualifying. In the race it's a different story. But because overtaking is so difficult, nearly everything is ruined by then". Ralf said he was working on adjusting his driving style to the car's handling characteristic, but warned against expecting too much in his first year at Cologne. "Sometimes I don't know what people expect. OK, we started well and now it's not as good, but we'll be back on the podium again, definitely" foxsports.news.com.au (16 June) Ralf on the 2004 US GP: The doctors' diagnosis was a staggering blow. I was really shocked. But the accident didn't change my conception of racing. I'm going to race at Indy with the same professionalism that I show at the start of all Grands Prix. Moreover I've had other accidents in my career which have not affected my speed in a race. homeoff1.com (15 June) Ralf: I'm often asked how I am going to feel returning to the scene of my accident. I'm also asked if I fear driving there again. The truth is, it doesn't change anything. I go to Indy with the same professionalism I take everywhere. I've had many accidents, and none of them have affected me. US GP: Toyota preview (13 June) Ralf: "Toyota has always performed well in Indianapolis despite not having had a particularly strong car in the past. So that certainly bodes well for us this season. The challenge of the speedway is juggling the set-up of the car to make sure we reach a good top speed along the banked start-finish straight into the first corner while making sure that the car is stable through the slow and twisty infield section" "But I have no doubt that we have the tools we need to perform well at Indy. Our RVX-05 engine has proven reliable and powerful, which will benefit us on the straight, whilst our aero efficiency has been gradually improved to cope with the infield" "As the home of motor racing in the US, Indianapolis is a special venue and, like Montreal, has a unique atmosphere. Since its arrival on the F1 calendar in 2000, Indianapolis has been an unlucky track for me. But this season is a different story and I am confident we can rectify this unfortunate record" |
